Longtime Puyallup Tribal Leader Herman Dillon Sr. Walks On

Puyallup Tribal Chairman Herman Dillon Sr., photographed in 2008 in Tacoma, died Friday, May 23. He was 82.

Elected to the Puyallup tribal council in 1971, Herman Dillon Sr. was a “tireless advocate for the social and economic betterment” of his tribe and tribes throughout the Northwest, Gov. Jay Inslee told The Seattle Times. Dillon walked on May 23, 2014 at the age of 82.

“Our whole family is grieving the loss of the head of our family,” his daughter Sheila Beckett told the Times. “We appreciate everyone’s condolences during this rough time. He was so important to all of us. He will be greatly missed.”

Dillon not only served on the Puyallup City Council for more than 35 years, but he also testified on Indian affairs in Washington, D.C., and supported treaty fishing and hunting rights. Dillon was a longtime friend of Nisqually activist Billy Frank Jr., who walked on May 5 at the age of 83.

“This is a sad day,” John Weymer, a spokesman for the tribe and Dillon’s personal friend told The News Tribune. “He’s had heart issues for years, but it still came as a surprise because he had been doing better for a while.”

During Dillon’s time leading the tribal council, the tribe went from poverty to prosperity, in large part due to casino gaming. He helped negotiate compacts with Washington State, and membership in the tribe more than tripled during his leadership, reports The News Tribune.

In a statement, Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland called Dillon “a constant and reliable leader for the tribe and the region.”

Jessica Christina Jones

God has called another beautiful angel home. Jessica Christina Jones lived in Tulalip, WA and passed away on April 9, 2014 in Seattle, Washington at the age of 25. She was born in Everett, Washington on August 1, 1988 to Ralph D. Jones III and Pam Blount. Jessica was born to a fisherman. She helped her dad fishing, loved to draw, country music and her cats. She attended school in Marysville, Washington. She enjoyed her culture; working with her dad clam digging, fishing, canning, berry picking and planting trees. People found Jessica to be sassy, with a great sense of humor. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She loved the family vacations every summer to Uncle Deans and Aunt Marilyns farm in North Dakota so she could watch him milk the cows and go for rides on his quad. She always enjoyed Grandma Lyla’s dumpling soup. Jessica is survived by her mother, Pam Blount; stepfather Butch Blount; grandmother, Lyla Skaggs and Popa Harry Dishman; she leaves her son Aiden Echo Mather; brother, Cody Blount; and sister, Sonia (George) SoHappy; Aunts Kimberly Skaggs, Rae Anne (Mike) Gobin, Karen (Steve) Gobin; uncle Jimmy Jones (Kristie Lawrence); nieces Kylee, Kira and Kaliyah SoHappy, nephew Koli SoHappy; as well as cousins Shelby Cleveland, Justine Jones and Natosha Gobin; Brent, Ron, Josh Cleveland, Kevin (Lani) Jones, Steven Gobin Jr. and Brian Jones Jr. ; great aunts and uncles, Jane Wright, Herman Williams, Clyde and Maxine Williams, Arley and Charlene Williams, Marilyn Tietz, Harry and Shirley Schmidt, Scharlotte Walter; special cousins Felicia Stripling, Who was also like a sister; And many other cousins. Viola Carol Gomez

Viola Carol Gomez was born on June 20, 1979, a Wednesday, and passed away on March 31, 2014, a Monday. She was a beloved mother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, and friend who will always be in our hearts. She is survived by her children, Isabel, Olivia, Raul Jr., Sebastian, and Yasmani; her parents, Lillian and Juan Gomez Sr.; her grandmother, Liboria Gomez Perez; her sisters, Danelle and Jose Loera and Alicia Amador; her brother, Juan Gomez Jr. and Candy Brown; her niece and nephews, Danicio, Talia, Victor, Juan III, and Raphael; her aunts and uncles, Alicia Cruz, Dennis Hegnes Sr., Bertha Jimenez-Gomez, Jaime Jimenez, Leticia Jimenez, Hugo and Francisca Muñoz-Gomez, Mario Muñoz-Gomez, and David Spencer Sr.; and numerous cousins. Mary Lou Williams

Mary Lou Williams, 43 went to be with the Lord March 23, 2014 surrounded by family and close friends. She was born in Everett, Wash. Nov. 01, 1970 to the late Patricia Ellen Williams of Tulalip, and Reggie Williams of Chilliwack, B.C. She leaves behind her father, Reggie and step-father, Dana Cheer; the father of her children, Ken C. Johnson; son, Antonio Johnson; three grandchildren, Azmiraya, Antonio Ki cois, and Antonio King; son, Kurtis Johnson; daughter, Kei’anna Johnson; sons, Quincy Johnson, Bryce Juneau, Takota Williams and Jeremy Kindness; significant other, Cameron Craig; a very special aunty, Mary Jo James; and many more aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends. Mary Lou’s vibrant personality touched many lives. Her sense of humor and laughter drew everyone near. Her scary stories about the basket lady frightened her kids into bed with her. She loved basketball and looked forward to each and every game especially when her oldest boys went to the State Basketball Tournament. Her favorite pastime was playing bingo with her mom and aunties, as long as she sat at the next table. Later on she started working for the Bingo Parlor. Her love for music started when she played piano as a young girl, and she loved to hear her boys rap and her daughter sing! She also loved to dance. Growing up in Tulalip, Mary loved the cultural dancing and singing and beach parties with family. During the holidays, she loved to play poker and board games with family. Mary Lou will be missed by all who shared her life. Charles E. Russell Jr.

Charles E. Russell Jr., 73 of Tulalip, WA passed away March 18, 2014. He was born April 5, 1940 to Charles and Ellen Russell in Coffeyville, Kansas. Charles worked as a Parts manager at Pacific Diesel. He married Marilyn Ross on July 7, 1958 and they were married for 53 years before she passing in 2011. He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Miller; brother, Roy Russell; five grandchildren, Randy Hudson Sr., Leta Hilliard, Michelle Miller, Sarah Miller, and John Miller; and eight grand-children, Shoshanah Hudson, Gracelyn Hudson, Randy”Moose” Hudson Jr., Jess Moses, Kiley Miller, Evalea Cortez, Angel Cortez, and Taleen Enick; and his cousins, Sam and David Shaw. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Myra A. Hubbard; and brother, Larry Russell. Services will be held Friday, March 21, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Tulalip Tribal Gym with burial following at Mission Beach Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home.

Larry Gene Rutter

Larry Gene Rutter, 61, died of pancreatic cancer on February 20, 2014. His wife, Deborah Shawver, and his son, Derek Rutter, survive him. Larry was born in Duluth, Minnesota; graduated from South Kitsap High School, and earned a degree in fisheries biology from the University of Washington. He had a successful career in salmon management policy, working for the Point No Point Treaty Council, the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission, and NOAA Fisheries. He served on the Pacific Salmon Commission and led the negotiations to achieve the salmon fishing treaty between the US and Canada. Larry was an accomplished carpenter and loved to fly airplanes, ride motorcycles, and snowboard. He was known for intelligence, wit, self-reliance, hard work, sense of fun, and ability to make the most of whatever he was doing. Larry was an “impact player” in everything he touched. A celebration of Larry’s life will be held on March 1, 2014 at 1:00 p.m., at the Skookum Creek Events Center, 91 W State Route 108, Shelton, WA. Mamie Pearl Oldham

Mamie Pearl Oldham Mamie Pearl Oldham, 45, went to be with our Lord on February 1, 2014. She was born June 2, 1968 in Everett to Albert Hood Sr. and Rachel (Moses) Hood. She was raised on the Tulalip Reservation. She was a Tulalip tribal member and she always honored her fathers teachings, Absentee Shawnee, from Oklahoma. She loved fishing, clam digging, harvesting berries, cutting wood, selling at Boom City “Rambo Shack” fireworks. She had a big heart with a beautiful smile. She was full of compassion and laughter. Everyone who crossed her path and became acquainted with her love received a nickname that was how she kept you close to her heart. Her children were her greatest gift, every single one of her 11 babies shine with her greatness. Mamie was extremely blessed with two grandchildren. She shared her children and grandchildren with her people teaching them our culture and prayer. Shaker became a solid foundation. She loved her walks, now that she begins the journey to her beloved daddy, brothers and sisters. She shall shine down blessings to all as she stomp dances in the clouds. We shall remain humble through all with her greatest memories. She is survived by her amazing life with “Abraham”, loyal hubby, Keith Abraham; her mother, Rachel; 11 children, Darlena (Dean), Jessica (Paul), Nik-ko-te (Anthony), Angel (Ryan), Lisa, Keith, Michael, Chya, Kira, Yamah; siblings, Alonzo and Yamah (Heather); two grandchildren, Preston and Landon. She was preceded in death by Marya Jones Moses; Elmer and Mamie Hood; Albert Hood Sr., Albert Hood Jr., Elaina Hood, Marya Hood, and Jordan Abraham. Visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m. at Schaefer-Shipman on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 followed by an Interfaith service at 6:00 p.m. at the Tulalip Gym. Richard S. Coles

“Dick” Richard S. Coles (Dick) passed peacefully in his sleep December 20, 2013. Dick was born July 20, 1934 in Everett, WA. He married Yvonne Joseph in 1968. He loved racing and working on cars, and had a special love for fishing. Dick was preceded in death by his son, Rickey, and wife, Yvonne. He is survived by his son, Robert Joseph Sr.; daughter in law, Lucinda; grandsons, Robert Jr. and Brandon; great-grandsons, Jordan and Braden; sister, Dorothy Wilson; special nieces and nephews, Donna Chambers, Adrian Henry, Alice, J Lee, Carrie, Randy Henry, Mike Johnson, Matt Joseph, Leroy Joseph, David, Larry, Laurie; and special caregiver, Alex Hatch. Funeral services will be held at Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home December 26, 2013 at 11 a.m., with burial to follow at Mission Beach Cemetery.

Leroy Martin “Lee” Fryberg Jr.

Leroy (Lee) Martin Fryberg Jr. Leroy (Lee) Martin Fryberg Jr. Sut ‘u kaad was a Tulalip Tribal member born on November 12, 1957 in Everett, WA. He entered into rest on December 7, 2013. He was born to the late Leroy M. Fryberg Sr. and Ella M. Hill. He was also adopted out and raised by the late Robert and Keeta Cameron, where he lived with them until he graduated from Everett High School in 1976. Leroy had a large heart and was committed to serve his family and his people. Throughout his life he helped many different people any way he could, he volunteered to help out at community events, helped cook for community gatherings, he loved being out on the water, beading, cutting wood, playing sports, and especially playing and spending time with the grandkids. During Leroy’s life he worked as a logger, security officer, commercial fisherman, as well as other odd end jobs. He met his lifelong partner of 24 years, Lahneen Fryberg, and together they raised eight wonderful children, Tanisha (Merlin), Kiah (Andy), Natasha (Ryan), Josephine (Chandell), Leila, Andrew, Brandee, Cameron. Also grandchildren, Keiara, Ladainian, Kailonna, Maleia, Bryson, Anderew Jr., and Aiden. He is also survived by siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, many adopted children and grandchildren, as well as many friends. Leroy was truly blessed with an amazingly large family. Leroy is preceded in death by his parents, Leroy M. Fryberg, Ella M. Hill, Robert and Keeta Cameron; his brother, Martin J. Fryberg and sister, Dee Dee Cameron; and grandsons, Dason Blondin and Jordyn Moses. A viewing will held December 11, 2013, 1p.m. at Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home with an interfaith service to follow at the Tulalip Tribal center at 6p.m. Funeral services will be held December 12, 2013, 10 a.m. at the Tulalip Tribal Center with burial to follow at Mission Beach Cemetery.

Wendy Leigh Gobin-Young

Wendy Leigh Gobin-Young, 52, passed away on October 16, 2013 in the comfort of her home surrounded by her family and friends after a courageous battle with multiple myeloma cancer.

Wendy was born in Arlington, Washington on June 23, 1961 to Thomas and Beverly Gobin. She was a very active participant in school and graduated from Arlington High School in 1979. Throughout her life Wendy dedicated her time to the Tulalip Tribes holding numerous positions including, but not limited to, a receptionist, fish hatchery technician, member on the Enrollment Committee and TERO Commission. She also held the position of Enrollment Manager for 8 years, attending conferences and trainings all over the United States bringing various new changes to the Enrollment Department. During this time Wendy began assisting families with funeral arrangements and was offered the position of Funeral Services Officer. Wendy was very respectful and compassionate when dealing with the preparations for the deceased; this compassion was greatly appreciated by all.

Wendy was a member of the Tulalip Tribes and was well known for her intricate micro-beadwork and Native American jewelry. She loved traveling to pow-wows, canoe journeys, Makah days, conferences and exhibitions throughout many states and reservations. The family is in hopes that her jewelry will be cherished and loved by all whom have received it.

She will always be remembered for her special attention to children and her abundantly stocked stand at Boom City, infamously named the “MOTHERLOAD”, which was stocked with fireworks in the beginning and candy/novelties in the later years. Wendy took great pleasure in singing for funerals, family events and weddings, as well as traveling with her father and the Church of God band during her entire life.

Wendy is survived by her husband and best friend, Steve Young; companion and caretaker, John Ancheta; mother, Beverly Gobin; children Corrina Gobin-Olson (Gary), Krisan Fryberg (Ross), and Michael Moseley (Nicole); adopted children, Jeffery Reeves, Rebecca Marteney, Samantha Marteney, Cidney Marteney, Julia Ancheta, Maxima Ancheta and Jasmine Ancheta; sisters, Valda Gobin (Herb), Helen Gobin-Henson (Dave), Debra Posey (Dean), Rhonda Gobin (Gerald); brothers, Billy Gobin (Teri), Johnny Dumont, Tony Gobin (Judy), and Mike Gobin (RaeAnne); grandchildren, Keely, Brooklyn, Izaiah, Hayleigh, Ross Jr., Mason, Makayla and Brock. She is also survived by an extended family too numerous to list. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Joe Pete and Ruth Gobin, James and Ann Duffy; father, Thomas Gobin; sister, Marilyn Lewis; and special nephew, Teddy Shane Orr.

Visitation will be held 1:00 p.m. Sunday, October 20, 2013 at Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home, 807 State Ave., Marysville. An Interfaith Service will be held Sunday, October 20, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. Tulalip Tribal Center, 6700 Mission Beach Road, Tulalip. Funeral Service will follow on Monday, October 21, 2013 10:00 a.m. at the Tulalip Tribal Center with burial to follow at Mission Beach Cemetery.
